Does a wood screw have more or less holding power if it penetrates the back side of the board?

I am fastening steel brackets to 3/4 inch plywood, I have a choice of 3/4 inch screws which will put 5/8 inches of screw thread in the plywood, or 1 inch screws which will come through the plywood about 1/8 inch. The plywood is house sheeting, so the penetration will not show or matter, Just wondering which will be the stronger hold.
