What is that red dot on a Indian woman's forehead?

So when I look through photographs or when I walk down the street and I see an indian woman and they have this red dot on their foreheads.. So all I want to know is what does it mean? why do they put it there? what does it represent?! Does it have anything to do with hinduism?
