What season of the year do birds come back from migrating?

I'm having a debate tomorrow about what season Emily Dickinson is talking about in her poem "These are the days when the birds come back" there are two groups, summer (group one) and spring (group two) We know it's about an Indian summer but Indian summer doesn't mean summer as in the weather. can anyone help?
